Dan Grading Syllabus

1st Dan
• Two kata from the following, one chosen by the candidate one by the grading officer.
• Kata of 3rd to 1st kyu: Pinan 1-5, Sanchin, Tensho, Bassai Dai, Kosokun Dai, Juroku,
Naihanchi 1, Matzukase.
• Kumite/ Ippon kumite (at the discretion of grading officer)

2nd Dan
• Two kata from the following, one chosen by the candidate one by the grading officer.
• Wanshu, Bassai Sho, Annanko, Jitte, Seisan.
• Kumite/ Ippon kumite (at the discretion of grading officer)

3rd Dan
• Two kata from the following, one chosen by the candidate one by the grading officer.
• Shisochin, Seienchin, Jion, Kosokun Sho, Niseishi.
• Demonstration of 3 bunkai for each kata – chosen by candidate.
• Kumite/ Ippon kumite (at the discretion of grading officer)
• The etiquette and attidude of candidate will also be taken into consideration.

4th Dan
• Two kata from the following, one chosen by the candidate one by the grading officer.
• Chinto, Rohai, Papporen, Tomari Bassai, Kururunfa.
• Demonstration of 3 bunkai for each kata – chosen by candidate.
• Kumite/ Ippon kumite (at the discretion of grading officer)
• The etiquette and attidude of candidate will also be taken into consideration.

5th Dan
• Two kata from the following, one chosen by the candidate one by the grading officer.
• Seipai, Suparimpei, Nipaipo, Unshu, Matsumura Bassai, Gojushiho.
• Demonstration of 3 bunkai for each kata – chosen by candidate.
• Kumite (at the discretion of grading officer)
• The etiquette and attidude of candidate will also be taken into consideration.
• In addition the candidate will be required to write a thesis on a subject advised by either Yamada sensei or Kamohara sensei.

6th Dan
• Any Two kata from the Shito ryu list.
• Demonstration of 3 bunkai for each kata – chosen by candidate.
• The etiquette and attidude of candidate will also be taken into consideration.
• In addition the candidate will be required to write a thesis on a subject advised by either Yamada sensei or Kamohara sensei.

 

Important note:
Applications to attempt 5th dan and above should be notified to the grading officer at least 6 months in advance. The thesis should be in English or in the native language with an English summary and should be sent to the grading officer at least 3 months before the date of grading.
